Retailers

Most people who don’t grow their own food will buy it from retailers, be it supermarkets, independent food stores, farm shops, food cooperatives, or local markets. This is why we’re researching which products are stocked by retailers, as well as finding out where the producers who supply the outlets are based.

The map below shows the local retailers we’ve discovered so far (140 and counting!) who sell local produce around Suffolk. Not all products sold by each outlet will be 30-mile food, but if we’ve mapped them, something in the shop will be local.

To use the map, click on it and a larger, interactive map will open. Hover your cursor over any of the coloured teardrop markers to see the name of the retailer. Click on the marker to bring up the full contact details for each retailer and what they sell. We’ve tried to categorise them according to the main food group they sell but many sell a mixture of items so have a good look for each – and if in doubt you can contact the shopkeeper for more information.

At the bottom of the map you can click on the different coloured teardrops to filter the display by type, depending on which food group or the type of outlet. The full details for each marked business are listed alphabetically below the interactive map  click on the text in the list and you will be taken to the marker on the map.  Enjoy shopping around 🙂

We’ll be adding to this over the coming months so check back regularly for updates to discover new local food outlets each month. It’s also worth checking out the list of producers on the Producers’ Page, as many of these sell from shops on their premises or at the farm gate… some may just be around the corner!

The Local Foods Suffolk producers list also gives outlets for many of the producers, including markets, and links to producers’ websites (with lists of stocklists available in some cases).

Are you a retailer selling a large amount of locally produced food? Please let us know by leaving a comment below, including what products you sell, and we’ll add you to our map. We’re particularly looking for shops near urban centres so more people can keep their food miles down and use their closest shop. Thanks muchly!

I am a Suffolk beekeeper and my bees produce Honey which I sell from my home in Thurston Suffolk.
The type and taste of our honey varies depending on the time of year and the nectar sourced by our bees. Some of our bees are kept in a wildflower meadow in the heart of Suffolk.

How do I find the retailers shown on the map? What do I do to find out their details?

    • Lucy says:

Hi David, if you click on the image on the Retailers page it will take you directly to the online map. Once displaying on your screen you can click on each little teardrop pointer and information on the retailer will come up, including full contact details and the food types they sell. Let us know if you have any problems doing this. You can also email us for more information on any of the retailers at 30milefoodchallenge@gmail.com and we’ll endeavour to get back to you ASAP. Many thanks, Kirsty.

  8. Jonn says:

My shop is NOT included on this site why not, is that the way to support local
retailers its appalling for someone to leave leaflets in the shop that don’t list my
    shop .

    • Lucy says:

      John
Many apologies for upsetting you. It wasn’t intentional. We have only included shops and other businesses that we know about, but as we say on the leaflet and website, we are sure there are many others we don’t and are encouraging people to tell us about them so they can be included. Could you tell us about your shop, and if you want to be included on our website, what it sells, address, postcode phone No and website, if you have one. Many thanks, Lucy

  9. I’m surprised the lising isn’t offering more information about the great work being done on locally sourced food at the East of England Co-op. Not only is it a co-op, but the locally sourced food on offer includes chicken, fish, pies and other staple foods. The link shows the local list of suppliers

    • Kirsty says:

Hello Sally. We have been fortunate to receive support from the East of England Co-op who kindly sponsored the design of our mini-directory, which has just been printed. We will add co-op branches to our map once we have checked them all out, as I believe each store’s Locally Sourced stock is slightly different. Thanks for flagging this up and for the link; it’s a great option for those who don’t use delivery services from producers and / or visit farm shops, which can sometimes be out of town. We look forward to checking out the local branches to see what they’ve got in stock. It’s great to some independent retailers are stocking produce from local producers too so there’s lots of options for buying local. I hope you’ll be joining in the challenge 🙂

    • Lucy says:

Thanks Sally, and sorry for not replying sooner. The Co-op (and their Sourced Locally range) is featured on our leaflet, but we hadn’t got round to adding all the stores onto the website maps, mainly because we didn’t have a list we could easily work with. Your comment prompted me to contact Kevin Warden, the Sourced Locally Manager, and he kindly provided one so we’ll be getting them on soon. The Co-op website now lists all the locally sourced products in each store which is really helpful. If your local one doesn’t stock an item, why not ask for it?
